The daughter of a potter, Kate Butler re-discovered her passion for ceramics and ceramic sculpture at the Pratt Institute, where she earned her MFA in Fine Arts and MS in Art History. She wrote her Art History thesis on ceramic sculptor Stanley Rosen, in the process conducting research into 20th and 21st century ceramics, the knowledge of which which she incorporates into her classes.
Kate’s work explores natural processes and movements through forms that feel alive, whole, and vaguely human. She is drawn to clay for how it allows her to think with her hands and to create intuitively, approaches she helps her students cultivate as well. Kate has attended residencies at Odyssey Clayworks in Asheville, NC, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO. See her work at www.katebutlerstudio.com or on Instagram @katebutler_studio
