Kate Butler is an instructor at Clayhouse.
The daughter of a potter, Kate re-discovered her passion for ceramics and ceramic sculpture at the Pratt Institute, where she earned her Master’s in Fine Arts and Master’s of Science in Art History. Strongly influenced by the ceramic sculptor Stanley Rosen and 20th and 21st century ceramics, she incorporates that academic theory into her classes. Kate’s work explores natural processes and movements through forms that feel alive, whole, and vaguely human. Clay allows her to think with her hands and create intuitively. It is this tangible experience that she shares with her students.
Kate has attended residencies at Odyssey Clayworks in Asheville, NC, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO. She also had a recent solo exhibition at ChaShaMa in New York City.
